Our Nation’s Capitol, Washington DC. This really is an amazing city. You can’t help feeling a sense of pride when you visit. Yes, we are angry at our government, but it’s our government. Yes, we want changes, but it’s a system that still works even at it’s worst. Yes, it’s dysfunctional but it’s our dysfunctional family. “We tread over the past as if it were merely yesterday.” Savannah, a coastal Georgia city, is separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. It’s known for its manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages and ornate antebellum architecture. Its cobblestoned historic district is filled with squares and parks like Forsyth Park, shaded by magnolia blossoms and oak trees covered with Spanish moss. The fountain at the north end of Forsyth Park is made of cast iron, was ordered from a Sears-Roebuck catalog and added to the park in 1858. It is reminiscent of fountains found in Paris and Peru. Parisian urban planning was centered on…

Back to Mayport Travel Day, and we’re headed back to Jacksonville and Hanna Park. It was a pretty short drive. As we neared Atlantic Beach, (going over a bridge) I looked into my side mirror and gasped, “I think that we just lost something off the roof of the trailer, Caleb! Maybe one of the air conditioners. I saw it go flying back onto the road!”. I pulled off to the side once across the bridge to find we had lost a side window! All that was left were the two arm brackets and the upper hinge. The window was gone! After we calmed down, we realized…

What I am enjoying most about this trip so far, is having these little gems of experiences. Small vignettes mixed in with the bigger stuff we’re doing. When you’re on vacation, I think you miss some of the more subtle things that are going on around you when you travel. You don’t really become immersed in what you normally do day-to-day. Because the park lies completely within the White Sands Missile Range, the park is subject to closure for safety reasons when tests are conducted on the missile range. On average, tests occur about twice a week, for a duration of one to…
